How Does the Biggest Online Shopping Brand in the Philippines Manage its Delivery Logistics?

Even in the dawn of courier & delivery services like Honestbee and GrabFood, and despite the very catchy jingle of Shopee, the popular South East Asian online shopping platform Lazada remains to be the biggest online shopping ecommerce brand in the Philippines. With a reputation that beckons tall orders from the growing online consumer population, one cannot help but ask, how does Lazada and their logistics provider in the Philippines handle their deliveries?

Right off the bat, it is worth noting that deliveries do not originate from only a single point in the country. As part of Lazada’s commitment to fulfilling purchases quickly, part of their logistics strategy is to setup multiple warehouses around the country. This is specially helpful since the Philippines is a big archipelago and its land mass is split into many little islands. As an online brand, they are heavily invested in logistics and only very recently have they made big purchases to improve their warehousing.

This optimized warehousing is then partnered with optimized shipping. If items will come from a supplier, it will first be brought to an office and then passed on to a courier service. There are items that Lazada will fulfill from their own warehouses directly. Among Lazada’s delivery partners are:
  • LBC
  • 2GO
  • XDE/Ximex
  • Ninja Van
  • Lex
Another thing to note is how Lazada handles shipping fee now which is not the same as how they did it back then.

Before, after hitting a certain purchase benchmark for any item, you can have your items delivered with free shipping. It is unknown whether it was a decision made by their suppliers or logistics provider in the Philippines but today, to get a discount for shipping, you have to hit a benchmark for items that come from the same supplier. Exempt to these are products are the ones indicated to be fulfilled by Lazada; these items are gathered from their own warehouses, then shipped by a partner courier.

This arrangement empowers suppliers to provide their own shipping fee promos to their products, not to mention, bulky products and purchases that weigh more than 5 kgs, or those that will ship to areas outside capable coverage which might incur buyers additional fees. If delivery promos today are being given out by suppliers themselves, how did Lazada manage to ship for free back then? Some believe that Lazada used to foot the shipping fee!

Whether Lazada is actually managing their own logistics or if they have a logistics provider in the Philippines is a specificity that is still up for debate. One thing is certain though: when it comes to optimizing the online shopping experience, Lazada knows what they are doing and other online brands would be wise to follow their example.
